COMMUNITY LED FLOOD RECOVERY
IN WESLEY AND ROSKILL
“Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.”
My strength is not that of an individual, but that of the collective.
WHO WE ARE
Roskill Together specialises in community led development. Our organisation works with the people of Mt Roskill - Puketāpapa to deliver projects and activities that empower individuals, bring neighbours together, and make life better for everyone.
We believe that real change happens when communities themselves take the lead.
When the 2023 floods and Cyclone Gabrielle hit, Wesley and Roskill residents faced major challenges with housing, wellbeing, and resilience. Out of this, our community in partnership with Auckland Council stepped forward to take a new approach:
to lead our own recovery.
Roskill Together is the anchor organisation for the Wesley and Roskill Community- Led Recovery Action Plan:
He Ara Hou - A New Path Forward.
As the anchor, we hold the funding that enables this mahi to happen. We make sure resources are directed where they are needed most, and that community voices guide every step of the process.
This means the work isn’t driven from the outside, but by locals, for locals.
OUR ROLE IN RECOVERY
Our role includes:
Supporting the community to lead their own community engagement and development local leadership - supporting residents, groups, and champions to shape recovery priorities.
Partnering to co-design alongside the Wesley and Roskill Leadership Rōpū – creating spaces where passionate locals champions, along with impacted owners and tenants can bring knowledge, ideas, and lived experiences together.
Strategic guidance and support - ensuring recovery plans reflect real needs and connect to wider systems like Council and Government.
Bridging gaps - providing a trusted platform so community intelligence is heard and integrated into decision-making.
Roskill Together is proud to hold this work
with our community.
By walking this path together - He Ara Hou -
we can make sure recovery is meaningful, inclusive, and lasting.
WHY COMMUNITY LED
RECOVERY MATTERS
Research shows communities recover better when they lead their own recovery. In Wesley and Roskill, this approach ensures that:
Recovery reflects our diverse voices and cultures.
Local organisations build the skills and capacity to continue leading into the future.
Funding decisions are made through participatory funding – where residents choose the projects that matter most.
The focus isn’t just on fixing problems, but on building stronger, safer, more connected neighbourhoods.
The vision is simple: that Wesley and Roskill not only recover from the floods but grow stronger through it. Recovery is about more than getting back to normal, it’s about building resilience, addressing housing and wellbeing challenges, and shaping A thriving future where people feel safe and connected.
