Working with Seniors

Providing social and educational activities for seniors isn’t just essential for reducing isolation, but ensuring they have a long and happy life. This is why Roskill Together has collaborated with groups like  ADCOSS, Age Concern, Bhartiya Samaj and Grey Power, to provide fun and informative programmes for the older residents of Mt. Roskill. We have provided first aid courses, healthy cooking programmes, dance programmes, positive aging workshops and walking groups for Seniors in the community.

Our biggest achievement to date has been the establishment of three Seniors Hubs. These hubs respond to gaps in services for seniors and go a long way in countering loneliness and isolation elderly people often feel. We work with  “Eden Village” (Landscape Road retirement village residents), Rainford Street retirement village, and Roskill Chinese Group. All these groups develop a social and educational programme in conjunction with Roskill Together staff. Including workshops, morning teas, cooking together, board game sessions, participation in local events, Tai chi, and outings. The programmes are community led as they are based on what the seniors would like to see happen for their groups. The Niuean seniors’ group are being supported to become an incorporated society and are participating in the Do Good Feel Good project.

Currently, we are working on developing intergenerational projects.
